THE <EMBED> tag

Even though the <EMBED> tag is not part of the HTML standard, it is currently the easiest reliable way to embed music and video files for both browser types (IE and Netscape) (although the <OBJECT> tag may soon be the standard).

http://www.tashian.com/htmlguide/web-audio.html - good simple guide, he also gave permission for me to print out his lessons.

http://www.primeshop.com/html/jump4.htm#music - another guide (targeted more for midi music files)

  1. Open Notepad and open the file called moviessound.htm (it is in a folder called moviessound on the Desktop).
  2. Place the text cursor beneath the opening BODY tag and above the line with <H1> Movies and Sound</H1>
  3. Type in the following html code
  4. <EMBED SRC="animals.wav" WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 HIDDEN="true" AUTOSTART="true" LOOP="false">

  5. Save and open the page IN BOTH BROWSERS. Try it in one, than in the other to compare the differences (if there are any),
  6. Go back to Notepad. Change the line of code you typed in step 3 to the following (you are changing the word false to true).
  7. <EMBED SRC="smiles.mid" WIDTH=1 HEIGHT=1 HIDDEN="true" AUTOSTART="true" LOOP="true">

  8. Save and check the page out in the Internet browser.
  9. Go back to Notepad. Change the line of code you typed in step 5 to the following
  10. <EMBED SRC="3dtetra2.avi" HIDDEN="false" AUTOSTART="true" LOOP="false">

  11. Check out this page http://24hourhtmlcafe.com/hour16/sound.htm . View the source to see how to include code to make a shutoff button for the music. Also check this page http://24hourhtmlcafe.com/hour16/downeast.htm to see an alternative to forcing music/video on a person.

There are other tags associated with sounds and movies. However, many of these tags are browser specific. The <EMBED> tag should work with both browsers (as long as the browser program version is a fairly recent version).
