What and Why Graphic Organizers

NJ standards to use in lesson planning - http://www.state.nj.us/njded/cccs/cccs.pdf

Do you know how to find standards mentioning graphic organizers?

Just a few examples of standards referencing GO

3.1.1.E.6          3.1.4.E.4          3.1.5.E.5          3.1.6.E.6          3.1.12.E.3

3.2.3.A.3         3.2.5.A.5         3.2.12.A.2       3.2.12.B.10      6.1.8.A.11

6.6.12.A.3       8.1.4.A.8         8.1.8.A.11

Questions to Ponder:

  • Why Should Graphic Organizers be used in the classroom?
  • Do they have practical application for outside the classroom?
  • How might a student encounter a graphic organizer outside of the classroom?

MY NOTES:

Activity and Examples:

Use your own experience or the links below to:

1.  List three student outcomes for using graphic organizers in the classroom (try to write a specific outcome based on your subject content – the student will be able to organize a series of dated events in chronological order using a timeline graphic organizer)

2.  Find two specific graphic organizer examples (use your own or from the examples) and explain how a person might use that exact organizer in a real world project.

3.  Delivery/Instructional Methods - How do you instruct with organizers - what delivery methods can be used?

When and How Graphic Organizers

Questions to Ponder:

  • Do you use them now?  If yes how, if no how might one use them?
  • Are all graphic organizers useful in all cases?  When might they not be useful?
  • How many different types of graphic organizers are there?  How many can you name/describe?
  • Think of the subject you teach, why types of graphic organizers might be useful?  What kinds might not be as useful in your subject area?

http://www.squires.fayette.k12.ky.us/library/research/problem.htm - examples of some common organizers

http://www.fcps.org/curriculum/language-elem/graphic.html - how different organizers used in specific activity

My Notes:

Activity and Examples:

1.  How might you use a graphic organizer in each of the following classroom situations?  Identify a type of organizer you would use.

Ø      As a Pre-Instructional Activity.

Ø      As a scaffolding activity to teach a study skill

Ø      As a scaffolding activity to teach content area material

Ø      As a project reporting tool

Ø      As an assessment tool

Ø     As a final project

2.  For each of the activities below – list one or two graphic organizers and how they would be specifically used in that lesson.

Ø     Comparing two historical figures.

Ø     Matching a tool to the proper project/use

Ø     Describing the cycle of photosynthesis

Ø     Identifying the seven steps to making a pie and what is needed for each step

Ø     Assigning project roles to a group of people and defining what the role's task is

Ø     Linking the destruction of an object to the events leading up to the destruction

Ø     Breaking a list of car parts into related categories and identifying how each set of parts is linked (hubcaps might be decorative but they are linked to tires and perhaps the bolts to hold the cap in place)

Ø     You are shooting a video and need to figure out the shots needed

Ø      After reading an article, you need to summarize the intent of the article, or need to relate the article's information to a real world event/application.

Where To Next With Graphic Organizers

Questions to Ponder:

  • Identify a lesson you could revise to include a graphic organizer.
  • What resources do I need to create/find/use graphic organizers?  Do I have these in my school?

My Notes:

Activity and Examples:

1.  Select three organizers and describe the specific use in the classroom (if you already use organizers – find three NEW ones)

2.  What do you need to bring an organizer into the classroom?  List specifically what you would need for each of the activities in question one and if your classroom has those resources.  If not, where would you go to find the resource.
