
Starting a Blank Presentation
1. Open PowerPoint from the Start Button (Programs).
2. Choose Blank Presentation.
3. Choose the first slide in the first row in the layout menu (called Title Slide).
4. Make sure the Formatting, Drawing and Standard toolbars are open (choose the View menu and select Toolbars if they are not).
Adding Text to a Slide and Working with Textboxes
1. You will see a box labeled "Click here to add Title". We are making a slide show about an animal of your choice (see the presentation handout). Please click in the title box and type a title for your presentation.
2. Highlight the text you just typed and change the size and the font type (from the Format toolbar). You can change the color of the text from the Font command found in the Format Menu.
3. Try the Increase Font and Decrease Font buttons on the Format toolbar to change the size of the font.
4. Click outside of the text box you were just typing in. The boxes and lines around the box should disappear. To change the text in the box or add more, you need to first select the textbox by clicking any of the text in the text box. The text cursor should appear (if it does not, try clicking in the box again) and you can now add/edit text.
5. Delete the sub-title text box.
w Click inside the sub title box.
w Hash marks (\\\\) should appear around the box. Point to the hash marks and left click once. The marks should change to dots.
w Press the delete key on keyboard.
Saving a Presentation
1. The Save command is located on the Standard Toolbar and in the File Menu.
2. Save the presentation to the Desktop. Name the file favorite animal.
Working with Clipart/Graphics
1. Add a graphic to your title slide.
2. Use the insert clip art button on the Standard toolbar or choose Picture from the Insert Menu.
3. Choose clip art.
4. Double click on the graphic you want.
5. You can now resize your graphic by pointing to the white boxes and dragging once a two-sided arrow mouse pointer appears.
6. To move the graphic point to the middle or edge and when a four-sided arrow mouse pointer appears drag the graphic to its new location.
7. You can also add a graphic from a file (instead of choosing clipart from the menu choose From File).
8. Insert a new slide using the new slide button (looks like a white rectangle with a sparkle at the corner on the standard toolbar) and choose the Text and Clip Art layout.
9. Add a title. This slide an introduction to your animal.
10. In the text box, type a quick introduction.
11. Place the mouse pointer in the clip art box and left double click. You can now add a clip art graphic.
Slide Layout
1. If you want to switch the clip art box with the text box there are two ways.
2. Point to the box's edge until you have the 4-sided arrow mouse pointer and drag the box to its new position.
3. OR, choose Slide Layout from the Format Menu and click on a new layout. The layout will automatically be applied.
Working with Bulleted Slides
1. Insert a new slide. Choose the bulleted list slide type.
2. Add a title and list some descriptive characteristics of your animal.
3. Change the size of the text (remember to select the text first).
4. Select the bulleted box and point to the Increase Paragraph Spacing button on the Format toolbar (has black lines and a blue arrow pointing up). This will change the spacing between the bullets.
5. To change the bullet for just one line, place the blinking cursor on the bulleted line to be changed.
6. Choose the Format Menu and select bullet
7. Pick the symbol you want (to see more symbols change the font type)
8. Color and font size of bullet can also be chosen here
9. Highlight all of the bulleted lines to change the bullet for the entire slide.
10. You would need to change the Master Slide to make the bullet the same for all slides.
Slide Sorter View
1. Switch to Slide Sorter View. This view displays all of the slides. You can easily rearrange slides or copy slides in this view.
2. To move slide 3 between slide 1 and 2, point to middle of slide 3 and drag the mouse pointer toward the space between slide 1 and 2. When a gray line appears between slide 1 and 2, release the mouse button
3. Point to slide 2 and hold down Ctrl key. Drag the slide to the right of the last slide and release mouse button. A duplicate slide should have appeared.
4. Point to slide 2 and left click once. A black box should appear around slide.
5. Press the delete key. Undo your action using the Undo button on the Standard toolbar.
6. A quick way to select multiple slides. Point to the left of the first slide and left click (gray bar should appear). Still pointing to left of first slide, hold down mouse button and drag to the lower right side of the slides. All slides should be selected
Viewing Your Slide show
1. Choose the View Show from the Slide Show Menu
2. Left click to move from slide to slide.
3. There are also keyboard shortcuts to move through a show.
4. If you point to the lower left corner of the screen, a rectangle with a triangle appears. Clicking the triangle displays the show controls.
Printing Your Slide Show
1. Select Page Setup from the File Menu to set printing options
2. Select Print from File Menu
3. Look at the options in the Print What box at the bottom of the menu to print slides, handouts, notes or outlines
4. Use Send To from the File Menu for other printing options.
