Cape May County ETTC Finding Graphics for Classroom Web Pages

Please check all sites before using in classroom. Most are suitable for classroom use, but many are geared for the general public and do not filter images.

All Sites are Bess Friendly unless otherwise noted

Citation and Copyright - What can I legally use?

  1. www.2learn.ca/copyright/images.html - Digital Images and Copyrights - has a good tutorial and a copy of a letter that students can use to obtain permission.
  2. mciu.org/~spjvweb/guidelines.html - a good set of guidelines for teachers. Has a template for permission mciu.org/~spjvweb/letter.html
  3. Look for the terms of use and citation method a web site wants used. See www.animfactory.com/sales/use.htm, http://www.usda.gov/oc/photo/faq.htm and arthist.cla.umn.edu/aict/html/license.html as examples.
  4. www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/dos.html - a good reference of Do and Do Not in the world of graphics

Review of Saving Pictures

  1. Use the mouse cursor to point to the picture to be saved.
  2. Right click and choose Save Picture As.
  3. Select the place to save the picture and change the file name. Make sure you add the proper extension at the end of the file name (if it is file type JPG - add .jpg to the end of the filename, if it is a GIF file type - add .gif).
  4. Click Save.

Educational Graphic Web Sites - Bess Friendly (most of these sites are copyright friendly for teachers do check the site's terms to be sure of the exact details)

  1. Agricultural Research Service - www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/index.html - The Image Gallery is provided as a complimentary source of high quality digital photographs available from the Agricultural Research Service Information Staff.
  2. American Memory Collections - rs6.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html - American Memory is a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections. Use the Collection Finder to search for specific pictures.
  3. A Visual Journey the 60s - americanhistory.si.edu/lisalaw/ - This photographic exhibition examines themes from the 1960s counterculture. Adults may wish to speak with children about the sixties to help them better understand that era within its own cultural context. Make sure you preview this site before using with students.
  4. Photographic Documentation of America's Vanishing Roadside Culture - www.highwayproject.org - The American Highway Project uses photography to document vanishing Americana such as motels, billboards, service stations, highway signs, tourist attractions, drive-in theatres and diners. We are a photographic resource for those interested in the history of transportation and architecture.
  5. Animation Factory - www.animfactory.com - often takes awhile to load and check the content, most is OK for students.
  6. Awesome Clipart for Kids - www.awesomeclipartforkids.com - We have Teacher, Student & Family-Friendly FREE clipart, coloring pages, backgrounds, banners, fonts, icons, lines, skins, worksheets and wallpaper with aliens, animals, cats, creatures, dogs, education, holidays, robots, sports, toys, weather & more - updated weekly by 13-year-old Tom Brown and his family!
  7. Billy Bear Graphics - www.billybear4kids.com/index.html - lots of basic clipart
  8. Classroom Clipart - classroomclipart.com - lots of images, does have ads
  9. Classroom Clipart Sources - 208.183.128.3/techupdate/classclip.html
  10. Creative Insanity Graphic Page - www.execpc.com/~strehlow/Site/Site.html - targeted for Students and teachers, I have not previewed all images, but they seem fine.
  11. Discovery School's Clipart - school.discovery.com/clipart - Discovery School now makes it easy to add graphics to your next project, whether it’s for home or school. Choose from hundreds of original clip art pieces, including animations!
  12. Exploring Florida's History - fcit.usf.edu/florida/default.htm - lots of photos that can be used for general purposes.
  13. Flags of the World - fotw.vexillum.com/flags - Flags of the World (FOTW) is the Internet's largest site devoted to vexillology (the study of flags). Here you can read more than 13,700 pages about flags and view more than 24,500 images of flags. - Please take note of this message and review the site accordingly - "There are many controversial subjects related to flags. For instance, the web site contains flags and news about independentist, anti-governmental, or even racist movements: this fact does not imply we support them."

  15. Images of Political History - teachpol.tcnj.edu/amer_pol_hist - A collection of over 500 public domain images of American Political History.

  17. NASA Planetary PhotoJournal - photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov - concentrates on the planets and solar system bodies.
  18. PageWorks - www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/dos.html - lots of basic graphics, takes a bit to load and has music
  19. Public Domain List - mciu.org/~spjvweb/cfimages.html - created by a librarian, lists some good sites.

USDA Image Gallery - www.usda.gov/oc/photo/opchomea.htm - and make available, to the people of the United States, useful photography depicting general agriculture, health, economics, resource conservation, forestry, and other programs administered by the agencies of the Department of Agriculture.

  32. Corbis - www.corbis.com - lots of photos, a few are free and you must register for the site; good for commercial uses. Please note this from the web site " . Additionally, this site and any Images may include historically and culturally important images and text that may contain subjects that reflect the social attitudes and circumstances of a particular time or location. You should be aware that your search may display results containing content that may seem inappropriate to its context, or text that could be potentially offensive."
  33. FreeFoto - www.freefoto.com - FreeFoto.com is one of the largest collections of free photographs for non-commercial use on the Internet. The comprehensive, yet easy to navigate site features 50 main sections with over 1000 sub headings. The photographs are free to private non-commercial users and for sale to other users.
  34. George Eastman Online Collections - www.geh.org - George Eastman House collects and interprets images, films, literature, and equipment in the disciplines of photography and motion pictures

  36. Kids Domain Clipart - www.kidsdomain.com/clip - a number of popup ads appear and one had a camera associated with a woman, but, the clipart is "kid-friendly" J

  41. Theme Pictures - www.cln.org/themes/pictures.html - This "Theme Page" is unlike most other CLN Theme Pages in that it does NOT have links to curricular resources or instructional materials. It's simply a set of links to web sites that have their own searchable collections of pictures, offer a search engine for finding pictures, or provide a metalist of links to photographs of a particular type. The use of digital pictures can enhance the learning of students of all ages and in many different subject areas - for example in providing resources for report writing. Teachers of all subjects may also find these links useful for supplementing their own lessons. DISCLAIMER: Many of the pictures present on the Internet are protected by copyright.   51. GifWorks - www.gifworks.com - It's an online GIF image editor. This unique tool is completely on-line -- nothing to download or install. Better yet, it's ABSOLUTELY FREE -- no prepaid tokens or subscriptions.
  52. JPEG Wizard - www.jpegwizard.com - The JPEG Wizard demonstrates Pegasus Imaging's ability to shrink and edit JPEG images without the damage of decompression and recompression. The JPEG Wizard Online Optimizer is a free service of Pegasus Imaging to provide the Internet community access to the only true JPEG compression optimization available. The JPEG Wizard Online Optimizer will also rotate/mirror your JPEG file with optimization, or completely without loss. I have not used this service extensively, but it seems to offer what it mentions.

  73. GoGraphic - www.graphsearch.com - a graphic search directory
  74. NARA collections - www.nara.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/0?path=images.txt&id=demo&pass=&OK=OK - Basic search form which searches only for archival descriptions that link to digital copies. Searches may also be limited by keyword, media type, and/or NARA unit. NARA is an independent Federal agency that helps preserve our nation's history by overseeing the management of all Federal records.
