Internet Freebies

Setting up an email account and why it is a good idea

Many freebie sites collect email addresses and will send out SPAM (junk email). Using a free account makes sure your personal account does not become cluttered

Different file types you may enounter and how to save

Some freebies are in the forms of files. Some files are easy to download (move from the web site to your computer) and some are not. Also, some file types require a specific program.

There are many different ways to save a file. Usually a file will have a link - visit this page to see an example.

If you left click on the link, it may take you to another web page with the file or a download prompt may appear. If the download prompt appears, follow the instructions on the screen to download.

If no download window appears, you can try right-clicking on the link and selecting save target as and that should save the file the link opens.

Adobe Acrobat = .PDF

PowerPoint Presentation = .PPT

MS Word Document - .DOC

Zipped file(s) = .ZIP

Searching

Searching for freebies can be tricky. You need to keep in mind when going to a free site it may be commercial or more educational in nature. Commercial sites tend to have lots of ads, are slower, open new windows and have many menus to click through.

You may also find commercial sites are biased or not really listing frrebies as much as collecting email addresses.

Some search words to include with the word freebie might be: teacher, classroom, education, educational, your subject area (such as science or biology) or the type of freebie like worksheet, kits, etc.

Check our online course Tips and Tricks for Surfing the Internet for more seach tips or check edweb.sdsu.edu/webquest/searching/fournets.htm and edweb.sdsu.edu/webquest/searching/specialized.html

ALSO - check out NEWSGROUPS - many groups form to discuss freebies and such - ask me how to register and find groups if interested.
