  4. The three tabs you will want to explore are Appearance, Screen Saver and background.
  5. Some words about Screen Saver and backgrounds - be careful.

  6. Many Screen Saver programs use a lot of memory and can slow down your computer. It is usually best to use a simple screen saver provided by the Windows operating system.
  7. You can use pictures from the Internet as your background. Open the Internet Explorer browser. Point to the ETTC logo that appears and right click. Choose Set as Wallpaper. Minimize the Internet and go back to Display Properties. Click the backgrounds tab and look at the option that is selected, this is automatically done for you.

Evaluating Software

  1. You must first decide if your system can even handle the program. Look at the outside of the packaging before even opening the program. Usually a good program will have SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS somewhere on the packaging.
  2. How to determine what you have. If you do not have manuals, you can always try pointing to the My Computer icon and right clicking. Some information about your computer is found here.
  3. To install programs you usually need to do one of three things (PS, you need only install a program one time).
  4. a. The program runs from the CD or disk and does not need to be installed.

    b. The program automatically starts an installation when you put the CD or disk in the first time and you just follow instructions.

    c. If you put the CD or disk in and nothing happens, open My Computer and double click on the icon for the CD-ROM drive (usually the D: drive) or the Floppy 3 1/2 A: for a disk. Look first for a Read Me file. Open that and see if it tells you what to do. Next, look for a setup.exe or install.exe program. If you see these, double click on the program and follow instructions.

  5. Once the program is installed, use the one of the following evaluation methods below to determine if software is a useful asset in your classroom.
