Searching - Definitions

Visit this site www.albany.edu/library/internet/search.html.

Web Portal - (webopedia.internet.com/TERM/W/Web_portal.html )Many Web Portals–"gateways"–began as Search Engines, and still retain the search option. Over time, to compete for users, they have added selected links, often arranged by subject, to many other resources on the web. In the latest round of improvements, some portals are adding free PIMs (Personal Information Managers), software that provides address book capability and even calendar facilities. Many other sites included here have always striven for excellence in their selection of links and topical guides. - www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,2327792,00.html www.farmlib.org/portals.html -www.zdnet.com/pcmag/features/webportals

Search (Subject) Directory (http://www.netlingo.com/lookup.cfm?term=search%20directory )- A subject directory is a service that offers a collection of links to Internet resources submitted by site creators or evaluators and organized into subject categories. Directory services use selection criteria for choosing links to include, though the selectivity varies among services. Most directories offer a search engine mechanism to query the service.

Search Engine - (http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/s/search_engine.html )

Search engines provide a useful tool to look up a topic when you don't have an appropriate web site to start from or you wish to find other sources of information on the World Wide Web. When you use a search engine, you look for pertinent web sites by searching for key words on their database.

There are dozens of Search Engines, all of which are a little different. Find one that you like and learn the ins and outs of narrowing a search using it. Many search engines are syntax sensitive so you may want to use these suggestions when searching:

If You Type:

It Will Search For:

cookie dough

All occurrences of cookie OR dough

+cookie +dough

All occurrences of cookie AND dough

"cookie dough"

For the phrase cookie dough: The words must be found together

-cookie +dough

All instances of the word dough but not the word cookie at the same site
